FINDING WELLNESS – SERIES 1 Finding Wellness is a free, 7-week fun and interactive series of classes focusing on topics designed to promote healthy living and well-being. Each class meets for 90 minutes once a week. Topics include nutrition, fall prevention, medication safety, hydration, stress management, pain management and more! Each class also includes 20 minutes of gentle exercise. The program is sponsored by The Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, a non-profit organization that has been providing senior services since 1981. Open to seniors age 60 or better. FINDING WELLNESS – SERIES 2 Finding Wellness Series 2 - Organ Systems and your Health
This free, 4-week class series explores your health and well-being as it relates to your brain, heart, liver and gut. In this fun and interactive class, you will learn tips and tricks on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle from a nutritional, physical and emotional perspective. Must be 60+ to attend. No other prerequisites apply. This program is sponsored by The Senior Support Program of the Tri-Valley, a non-profit organization that has been providing senior services in the Tri-Valley since 1981. Class A: Brain Health Class B: Heart Health Class C: Gut Health Class D: Liver Health Class E: Skin Health (coming soon!)
Class A will: explain Alzheimer’s disease, explain how certain dietary choices can either protect or threaten the brain, give benefits and menu options for foods in the M.I.N.D. diet, emphasize the importance of Vitamin D and B12 for brain health, detail how medication interactions can affect the brain, stress the importance of physical exercise and brain exercises. Will explain how to do a Sudoku puzzle which fosters brain health.
Class B will : explain coronary heart disease, artery health, the D.A.S.H. diet, show you how to incorporate more fruits/vegetables in your diet, explain appropriate sodium levels, explain different types of oils, explain how sugar and alcohol effect your heart, detail the benefits of exercise and meditation, explore the importance of emotional well-being for heart health, conduct a short meditation practice at the end of class.
Class C will: show how the gut and the brain are linked and how the gut and GI tract functions, summarize problems that can arise (like GERD, ulcers, IBS, lactose intolerance, leaky gut). Emphasize the Importance of B12, magnesium, and beneficial bacteria (microbiota), Differentiate between probiotics and prebiotics, explain how depression and anxiety relate to gut health, detail the best foods for gut health, explain how sugar affects the gut, and help you understand the importance of exercise and sleep.
Class D will: explain liver functions and diseases of the liver, summarize the best diet for a healthy liver, emphasize the importance of fiber, show how alcohol affects the liver, explain how the liver metabolizes medications.
Class E will: explain the structure and functions of skin, explore lifestyle and nutritional choices that can create building blocks for skin health and negative choices that can threaten skin health, provide skin-friendly recipes and sample menu ideas.
